Angelo State University (ASU), located in San Angelo, Texas, was established in 1928. It opened as San Angelo Junior College with 112 students. It flourished during the Great Depression, even dropping the “Junior” from its name to become San Angelo College during that period. The campus moved to its current location in the early 1950s. It also admitted its first black student in 1953, the year before the Brown v. Board of Education case mandated the desegregation of public schools. The school became Angelo State College in 1965, Angelo State University in 1969, and the College of Graduate Studies opened to students in 1970. It joined the Texas Tech University System in 2007.

Today, ASU enrolls more than 10,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are blue and gold, and its athletic nicknames are the Rams and the Rambelles.

Academic Offerings

The university offers more than 40 bachelor’s degrees, more than 20 master’s degrees, and a single doctorate degree (in physical therapy) across its six academic divisions: the Archer College of Health and Human Services, the College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Education, the College of Graduate Studies and Research, the College of Science and Engineering, and the Norris-Vincent College of Business.

On Campus

One point of interest on campus is the ASU Planetarium, one of the largest university planetariums in the U.S. It’s also one of the largest community outreach programs on campus, welcoming just short of 10,000 visitors of all ages per year. Some noteworthy campus traditions include homecoming week, featuring a pep rally, Spirit Stick competition, and bonfire; the Ram Jam, a pregame football tailgate party before each home game; and the Gum Tree, a mesquite tree speckled with thousands of pieces of used chewing gum deposited for luck.

Notable Alumni

Notable Angelo State University alumni include reality TV contestant Rupert Boneham; Emmy Award-winning actor Bill Erwin; voice actress Luci Christian; author Lucy A. Snyder; former Chief of Staff of the United States House Committee on Agriculture A. Mario Castillo; and CNN correspondent Satcha Pretto.
