Clark University, located in Worcester, Massachusetts, was established in 1887. It was founded as an all-graduate institution, but it opened its doors to undergraduates in 1902. As a private research university, it’s known for its contributions to knowledge in the fields of psychology, geography, and physics. The school’s colors are scarlet and white, and its athletic nickname is the cougars.

Campus History

In 1909, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the school’s opening, the university president invited several leading thinkers of the time to speak. These speakers included Sigmund Freud (his only lectures outside Europe) and Carl Jung, who delivered his famous “Clark Lectures” that introduced the concept of psychoanalysis to the United States. Clark Ph.D. student Paul Siple developed the theory of wind chill factor, and the university is also the birthplace of the birth control pill. Notable musicians who performed at Clark include Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, and Bruce Springsteen.

On Campus

Clark offers an accelerated B.A./Master’s program sometimes called the “Fifth-Year Free” program. Undergraduates who meet certain eligibility requirements can begin a two-year graduate program during their senior year and receive full or partial tuition assistance during their fifth year, effectively earning a bachelor’s and a master’s degree for the price of a bachelor’s.

Notable Alumni

Notable Clark University alumni include Jeffrey Lurie, owner of the Philadelphia Eagles; Ronald Shaich, CEO of Panera Bread; author and model Padma Lakshmi; and Janice Culpepper, senior program officer for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
