East-West Center - Honolulu International Student Insurance

The East-West Center, also known as the Center for Cultural and Technical Interchange Between East and West, is an education and research organization headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was established by the U.S. Congress in 1960, and its mission is to promote better relationships and understanding among the people of the United States, Asia, and the Pacific. It’s located adjacent to the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, about halfway between Asia and the U.S. mainland. Its campus features research, residential, and international conference offices. The Center serves as a resource for information and analysis on important issues of concern to both regions, as well as a place to exchange viewpoints and develop policy options.

As an institution for public diplomacy, the Center has a worldwide network of more than 65,000 alumni and more than 1,100 partner organizations. It’s an independent, public, nonprofit organization that receives funding from the U.S. government as well as financial support from private agencies, individuals, foundations, corporations, and other governments.

Programs

The East-West Center is made up of several different programs that carry out individual facets of its mission. The Research Program conducts multidisciplinary research on contemporary issues significant to Asia, the Pacific, and the United States. The Education Program, which cooperates with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, enrolls graduate students to develop skills, information, and the regional literacy needed to foster communities and relationships. The Pacific Islands Development Program works on a wide variety of initiatives to enhance the quality of life in the Pacific Islands. The East-West Center in Washington (EWC Washington), located in Washington, D.C., serves as the program’s home base in the nation’s capital. There’s also the Office of External Affairs, which handles briefings and special events; the Office of Development, which handles fundraising and alumni relations; and the Office of Administration.

The Center also operates the East-West Center Arts Program, which puts on performances and art exhibitions from artists in the Asia Pacific Region.
