The Florida Institute of Technology, located in Melbourne, Florida, is a private, nonprofit doctoral and research university established in 1958. It was founded by Dr. Jerome P. Keuper as Brevard Engineering College in support of NASA. The first classes were held at the Melbourne Municipal Airport until the campus moved to its current location in 1961. The university gained accreditation in 1964 and changed to its current name in 1966. Campus continued to expand in the 1980s with a new library, administration building, student center, and research lab. Today, FIT enrolls more than 6,000 students and counting each year. The school’s colors are crimson and gray, and its athletic nickname is the panther.

The school has gained the trademarked nickname “Florida’s STEM University.” About half of FIT’s student body is enrolled in the College of Engineering, and other STEM offerings include the Aldrin Space Institute, the Math Advancement Center, and its Math and Science Teacher Education program. The school’s research programs include the Institute for Energy Systems, the Institute for Materials Science & Nanotechnology, the Institute for Research on Global Climate Change, and the Institute for Computing and Information Systems.

FIT is also the site of the Foosaner Art Museum, which offers art classes and free admission to the public, and the Gleason Performing Arts Center, nestled within a botanical garden and home to student theater, choral, and orchestral performances.
