Florida State University, located in Tallahassee, Florida, was established in 1851 and is the oldest continuous site of higher education in Florida. It’s made up of 16 colleges and offers more than 300 degree programs. The university has two campuses, the main site in Tallahassee and a satellite location in Panama City.

On Campus

FSU is known for its focus on research, participating in national space-grant and sea-grant research programs. The main campus is home to the only National Laboratory in Florida, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, and produced the popular anti-cancer drug Taxol. Researchers at FSU contributed to the construction of the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. The university also houses museums like the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art and the State Art Museum of Florida.

FSU is also known for its strong athletics program. They compete in NCAA Division I, and their varsity sports teams have won 20 national championships, 78 individual NCAA national championships, and counting. The school’s colors are garnet and gold, and its athletic nickname is the Seminole. 

Notable Alumni

FSU alumni have gone on to serve in U.S. Congress, the Florida Legislature, and as college and university presidents at the university itself. Notable graduates and attendees of FSU include Mokgweetsi Masisi, President of Botswana; musician Jim Morrison; actors Burt Reynolds and Paul Gleason; fitness guru Richard Simmons; astronaut Winston Scott; and NFL legend Deion Sanders.
