General Information

The Nova Southeastern University Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, located in Dania Beach, Florida, is a satellite location of Nova Southeastern University. Located about 12 miles east of the university’s main campus, the campus lies at the end of Von D. Mizell and Eula Johnson State Park, directly along the entrance channel of Port Everglades and within 300 feet of the open Atlantic Ocean. This spot allows open access to the Gulf Stream, the Florida Straits, and the Bahama Banks. The center’s purpose is to give marine science graduate students classroom, laboratory, and field experience in research, management, and conservation.

Academic Offerings

The center offers master’s degrees in biological sciences and marine science, a Ph.D. in oceanography/marine biology, and a graduate certificate in computational molecular biology. 

Facilities and Research Opportunities

The center’s facilities include classrooms for onsite lectures; laboratories including capabilities for scanning and transmission electron microscopy, mapping and geospatial analysis, microbiology, ecological modeling, and deep sea optical and vision; a graduate student center with a study area and a lounge; and a Student Government Association office. It owns and operates seven coastal research vessels. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service also permanently staffs employees in several offices at the center.

The Halmos College houses three major research institutes: The National Coral Reef Institute, the Guy Harvey Research Institute, and the Save Our Seas Shark Center. Research areas of interest include impacts of global and local stressors; geospatial analysis and mapping; deep sea coral reefs and organisms; genetic and genomic connectivity; and hydrodynamics.
