It was founded in 1885 by former California Governor Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane Lathrop Stanford, in honor of their only son, Leland Jr., who died of typhoid fever in 1884. The school opened its doors to students on Oct. 1, 1891.

Stanford has an enrollment of more than 16,000 students, 2,000 faculty, and counting. Its colors are cardinal and white, and though the school doesn’t have an official mascot, its sports teams are referred to as the “Stanford Cardinal.”
