The University of Denver (DU), located in Denver, Colorado, was established in 1864. It was founded by John Evans, former governor of the Colorado Territory, as the Colorado Seminary. As the city of Denver grew from a mining town into an urban area in its own right, the school expanded its offerings to become the University of Denver in 1880. Graduate instruction began in 1891. The first female and black students graduated in 1886 and 1900, respectively. Today, the university enrolls about 12,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are crimson and gold, and its athletic nickname is the pioneers.
