The University of Houston–Victoria (UHV), located in Victoria, Texas, was established in 1973. It was founded as an effort by residents of the community to bring a higher-education institution to Victoria. After some coordination with Texas legislators, the University of Houston Victoria Center opened as an off-campus satellite location of the University of Houston; in its first year, 100 students enrolled. In 1983, the Texas Legislature passed a bill that gave the center permanent degree-granting status. It gained its current name and became the fourth independent university in the University of Houston system.

In 2009, the school was approved to admit underclassmen and offer freshman- and sophomore-level courses.

Today, the school enrolls more than 4,000 students and counting each year. Its colors are red, black, and gold, and its athletic nickname is the jaguars.

On Campus

UHV is home to the American Book Review literary journal, a nonprofit publication published every two months that specializes in reviews of fiction, poetry, and literary criticism; and the UHV Small Business Development Center, a member of a nationwide small business assistance program that offers counseling, training, and technical assistance to existing and start-up businesses.

UHV has also been designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Hispanics make up roughly 40% of the student body.
