The University of Southern California, located in Los Angeles, California, was established in 1880. During its formative years, it was associated with the Methodist Church; that affiliation was formally dropped in 1926. Its first graduating class of three students received bachelor’s degrees in 1884. During the 1920s, USC created one of the country’s first international relations and public administrations programs and awarded its first doctorate in 1923. Today, it enrolls more than 48,500 students and counting each year. The school colors are cardinal and gold, and its athletic nickname is the Trojans.

On Campus

The USC Library system is among the oldest private academic research libraries in the state. Noteworthy collections include the USC Warner Bros. Archives, the largest studio collection in the world; the USC Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education, which includes stories from more than 52,000 Holocaust survivors and rescuers; and the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives, the largest collection of documents related to the LGBT community in the world.

USC has also gained prominence for its athletic programs, having won more than 100 NCAA team championships and more than 400 individual championships. The university has produced more Olympic athletes than any other in the United States with a total of (at least) 288 medalists.

Notable University of Southern California alumni include filmmakers Judd Apatow, George Lucas, and Robert Zemeckis; actors Will Ferrell, John Ritter, and America Ferrera; football legend O.J. Simpson; and NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon.
